The Government’s Role and My Responsibility In It
When God, in Genesis 1:2-28, created man in His image, He speaks of multiplication, dominion, and ruling in the Cultural Mandate. Government has become an institution, and, in many countries, a very powerful one. The question we need to ask is: What should the role of government be in our societies? How much control can or should the government exercise over our personal belongings, beliefs and convictions, often including our families and our businesses? We know that the understanding of what the role of government should be is greatly influenced by different beliefs about God; His creation order, the human race, and how we were designed to live together.

The history of the founding of the United States and its government is a unique one. It is by many called the “American Experiment” which makes reference to its unique founding on principles expressed in the Declaration of Independence and its Constitution. Many of the Founding Fathers were Christians and their beliefs had a unique place in the shaping of the New World, establishing a history of tremendous freedom, prosperity, and influence.
Why is this important today? 240 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed and the Constitution was written, we can still learn from its founding principles and look at it as a framework that can help us understand how we should think of a government by the people and for the people.
Many Latin countries and others around the world used the founding of the US and its constitution as a model for their independence and governance.
In this course, we will take a look at history, specifically the American Experiment, so we can better understand where we are today. But even more so, to understand where we can and must go, as we think of the role of government and our role in it, as Societal Architects.
This is not a course just on history. It will inspire you to see the tremendous sacrifices made by others who believed that God wanted us to live in freedom in a present world. Not as people just looking towards heaven, but as those seeing a reflection of heaven on Earth. So, we will be inspired to be a part of the change that we desire to see in society as Societal Architects.
You will learn the importance of religious freedom, what the God-given rights are for each person created in His image, the division of powers in government, the democratic process, and the idea of government officials representing the people who elected them. We will also visit why the character and convictions of those we elect are so important, understanding the rule of law and the law-making process, and how our economy and prosperity is closely related to the different ideas people in government have, among other principles.
“Understanding the role of government and our role in it” is important to all members of society who can determine the future of that society, and therefore, their children and children’s children. Let’s look at the blueprints that will create a free, prosperous, and virtuous society.
